AdventHealth Tampa has become the first hospital in the Tampa Bay area to conduct a transabdominal colorectal surgery using the da Vinci SP (single port) robotic system. The procedure, a partial colectomy, was performed by Dr. Ahmed Allawi, a colorectal surgeon at the facility.
The da Vinci SP robot, recently authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in colorectal surgeries, had previously been approved for procedures in urology and in head and neck surgeries. The system is designed to enable minimally invasive operations through a single incision, utilizing a single-arm design that provides 360-degree access and enhanced precision in confined anatomical areas such as the pelvis.
Until now, similar procedures using the da Vinci SP system in Florida had only been carried out in select hospitals in Orlando and Miami. According to AdventHealth Tampa, the implementation of this technology aligns with efforts to broaden the scope of robotic-assisted gastrointestinal surgeries at the institution.
