AI helps to keep ships safe at sea

by Pieter Werner

German shipping company Harren Group is teaming up with London-based tech firm Orca AI to bring artificial intelligence to the bridges of its new vessels, aiming to make life at sea safer and operations more efficient. The partnership will see Orca AI’s smart navigation system installed on Harren Group’s latest fleet of heavy-lift and multipurpose vessels.

The technology uses cameras, thermal imaging and computer vision to help crews spot potential hazards earlier, cut down on near misses and improve decision-making both on board and on shore. “By integrating AI into our newbuilds, we’re taking safety to the next level,” said Nils Aden, Managing Director at Harren Group. “We can now track and measure navigational behaviour in real time, helping our crews operate with more awareness and confidence.”

The Orca AI system links bridge operations with fleet managers on shore through a continuous stream of data. The onboard “SeaPod” lookout monitors surrounding traffic and conditions, while the “FleetView” dashboard lets managers review incidents, compare vessel performance and identify training opportunities.

Orca AI Co-founder and CEO Yarden Gross said the move shows how shipping companies are using artificial intelligence to make navigation smarter and safer. “By combining real-world navigational data with AI-driven insights, operators like Harren Group are building a more transparent and proactive safety culture,” he said. The technology will debut on the MV Elise, the first of Harren Group’s new Orca-class vessels. Harren Group sees the project as part of its wider push toward data-led safety and sustainable operations at sea.
