AiMOGA Intelligent Police Unit R001 Enters Urban Traffic Service in Wuhu

by Pieter Werner

AiMOGA Robotics has deployed its Intelligent Police Unit R001 at a major intersection in Wuhu, marking the introduction of a humanoid robot into live urban traffic management. The robot has been placed at the intersection of Zhongjiang Road and Chizhu Mountain Road, where it operates alongside human officers in regulating traffic flow.

The R001, identified on site as “ZhiJing R001” or “Intelligent Police,” is stationed on a traffic island and performs standardized hand signals to guide vehicles and non-motorized traffic. Designed to collaborate with field officers, the robot undertakes repetitive and structured traffic guidance tasks, allowing human personnel to concentrate on situations requiring judgment and intervention.

The Intelligent Police Unit R001 is the first humanoid robot developed within AiMOGA’s police robotics line. In its initial phase of deployment, it focuses on traffic guidance and the issuance of behavioral advisories, particularly for non-motorized road users. The system is integrated with urban traffic signal infrastructure and is capable of identifying disorderly traffic behavior and delivering standardized verbal warnings. Its technical configuration includes autonomous movement within designated zones, high-resolution road monitoring, and multimodal perception intended to support operation in dense and complex traffic environments.

AiMOGA positions the use of the R001 as part of a broader effort to reduce the physical demands placed on traffic police officers, who are routinely exposed to weather, pollution, and noise at busy intersections. The robot operates continuously, providing consistent signaling and enabling assessment of human–robot collaboration under real working conditions.

The deployment of the R001 forms part of AiMOGA’s scenario-based development strategy, which emphasizes testing systems in operational environments rather than controlled laboratory settings. According to Zhang Guibing, general manager of AiMOGA Robotics, “Products developed solely in the lab will never truly mature,” adding that real-world deployment is necessary to achieve reliability.

The traffic police robot was also presented as part of AiMOGA’s broader robotics portfolio during Chery AI Night 2026, an event showcasing artificial intelligence applications across multiple domains. AiMOGA operates within the artificial intelligence strategy of Chery Group, where robotics is positioned alongside intelligent vehicles and manufacturing systems as an area of expansion beyond the company’s core automotive business.

By 2025, AiMOGA had delivered 300 humanoid robots and 1,000 quadruped robots for use in more than 100 operational scenarios across over 30 countries and regions. The company has also completed European Union certification for its humanoid robot hardware and software. AiMOGA stated that future development of the Intelligent Police R001 series will focus on applications such as real-time emergency coordination and public information services within urban traffic systems.
