RealSense has introduced the D585 Pro, an AI-enabled depth camera for robotics and industrial automation, alongside a beta version of its Perception Studio software platform. The D585 Pro is built around RealSenseâs Gen 5 system-on-chip, which integrates a depth engine, image signal processor, digital signal processor, AI accelerators and a quad-core Arm processor. The camera processes depth and image data on the device, reducing the computing workload placed on a host system.
RealSense said the camera provides more than twice the depth quality of its previous-generation products and 2.5 times better close-range performance than competing systems. The company said the D585 Pro can operate at distances ranging from less than 15 centimetres to more than 10 metres.
The camera has a 120-by-100-degree field of view and supports capture at 60 frames per second with a resolution of 1,280 by 960 pixels. It includes dual infrared projectors, dual RGB imaging, built-in infrared filters and IP65-rated protection. Connectivity options include GMSL2 and USB-C, with hardware synchronisation for GPU- and x86-based systems.
RealSense is targeting applications including humanoid robots, autonomous mobile robots, collaborative robotic arms, industrial inspection and conveyor scanning. The company said multiple robotics developers are evaluating the camera.
The D585 Pro will initially include enhanced depth processing and a beta version of person detection running on the camera. RealSense plans to add functions such as visual-inertial odometry, occupancy-grid generation, automatic calibration and face detection through subsequent software-development-kit updates.
An optional depth-compression feature will reduce streaming bandwidth by combining each block of four pixels into a single depth data point. RealSense said this lowers depth-stream bandwidth by 75% without reducing detail or accuracy. A dual-RGB function will support simultaneous RGB and depth streams at 30 frames per second, with the data combined on the camera.
Perception Studio will provide registered developers with early access to capabilities being developed for the RealSense 2.0 software-development kit. Initial beta features include close-range depth sensing below three centimetres on the D401 and D405 cameras, close-range sensing below 15 centimetres across the D400 series, person detection and visual-inertial odometry using cuSLAM on Nvidia host hardware.
The D585 Pro is expected to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2027.
