Autonomous robot delivery in New Jersey

by Pieter Werner

Grubhub introduces autonomous robot delivery through an expanded partnership with Avride, launching a pilot program in Jersey City, New Jersey. The initiative enables customers ordering from Wonder’s Jersey City location to select robot delivery if their address falls within a defined range. It represents the first instance of Grubhub offering autonomous delivery outside of college campuses and the first use of the technology by Wonder.

Wonder operates a multi-restaurant model, offering menu options from more than 20 restaurant concepts, including Alanza, Tejas Barbecue, and Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson. Orders are prepared to order in Wonder’s storefronts and delivered directly to customers.

The pilot employs Avride’s latest generation of delivery robots, which use AI-based autonomous navigation to operate in urban environments and diverse weather conditions. Each unit features a four-wheel chassis capable of sharp turns and maneuverability suited to busy sidewalks.

Grubhub and Avride have previously collaborated on university campuses, completing more than 100,000 robot deliveries across the United States. Their largest deployment is at The Ohio State University, where over 120 robots make daily food deliveries.

Grubhub plans to review the pilot results and apply its findings to potential future expansions of autonomous delivery in additional U.S. markets.
