China Opens Training Center for Humanoid Robots

by Marco van der Hoeven

China’s first heterogeneous humanoid robot training facility, the Humanoid Robot Kylin Training Ground, has officially opened in Shanghai. Established through a cooperation agreement between Shanghai Electric and nine research enterprises, the facility is designed to train humanoid robots for industrial applications. It currently houses over 100 robots, with plans to expand capacity to 1,000 by 2027.

The initiative aims to advance the use of humanoid robots in industries such as equipment manufacturing, automotive production, and home appliances. Through continuous training, these robots will accumulate operational data to refine large-scale robot models and support broader industrial adoption.

Since March 2024, Shanghai Electric’s Central Research Institute has been working with the National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center to apply humanoid robots in high-risk environments, particularly in the nuclear power industry. On December 1, 2024, the first humanoid robot for routine nuclear industry operations was deployed. The robots are designed for tasks such as inspections and material handling, with the goal of improving efficiency and safety.

Shanghai Electric plans to further integrate humanoid robots into industrial applications, particularly in nuclear power production, as part of its broader efforts to enhance automation and technological innovation.
