Epson Robots has announced a strategic investment in Blank Beauty, a Knoxville-based technology company specializing in on-demand, customized manufacturing of consumer packaged goods. The move is part of Epson’s broader initiative to expand its robotics technology into the retail and service sectors.
The collaboration combines Epson’s automation technologies—including the T3 All-in-One SCARA Robot, Epson RC+ software, and spectroscopic vision systems—with Blank Beauty’s autonomous manufacturing platform. This integration has enabled the development of an in-store kiosk capable of producing single- and small-quantity custom-color nail polishes. The kiosks, which measure two feet by two feet, use Epson’s robotic arms to mix and dispense products in real time and have already been piloted in selected locations of a national retailer.
According to Epson, the system not only facilitates on-demand production but also functions as an interactive retail display. The installation aims to merge personalized manufacturing with consumer engagement, a concept referred to by the companies as “retailtainment.” In addition to physical retail environments, the partnership extends to e-commerce. Online customers can use web applications integrated with Epson’s equipment to order custom products, with automation handling formulation, mixing, packaging, and shipping.
Blank Beauty co-founder and CEO Charles Brandon noted that the company’s platform required a partner capable of delivering flexible and stable automation. The partnership was facilitated by APTUS DesignWorks, with Epson joining alongside suppliers such as Kirker Enterprises and investor Evolution VC Partners. Epson and Blank Beauty plan to expand their customizable offerings to include other beauty products such as gel nail items, liquid foundations, and lip glosses. They are also exploring the application of the platform in adjacent product categories, including custom paints, fragrance products, and skincare.
