First Autonomous Mobile Robots Roll Off the Line at Rockwell Milwaukee Headquarters

Rockwell is now largest industrial automation company building AMRs in the U.S.

Rockwell Automation has begun production of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) at its Milwaukee headquarters, marking the company’s first U.S.-based manufacturing of these systems. The facility now assembles the OTTO 600 and OTTO 1200 models, developed under the OTTO by Rockwell Automation brand, which originated from Rockwell’s 2023 acquisition of Clearpath Robotics.

The 25,000-square-foot production area expands Rockwell’s capacity to meet growing demand for automated material handling solutions in industrial settings. The AMRs are designed to transport heavy materials and navigate factory environments autonomously, reducing reliance on manual forklifts. According to the company, this automation can enhance safety and operational efficiency while minimizing product damage.

Robert Buttermore, senior vice president and chief supply chain officer at Rockwell Automation, said the expansion broadens the company’s material handling portfolio and provides a demonstration environment for customers to observe automation technologies in operation.

Each OTTO AMR undergoes extensive testing before shipment, including more than 15 miles of autonomous driving. The robots use laser scanners to create virtual maps of their surroundings and maintain awareness of other units operating nearby through shared communication systems.

Production in Milwaukee adds to existing AMR manufacturing at Clearpath’s facilities in Ontario, Canada. Rockwell stated that the move is part of its broader effort to strengthen supply chain resilience and increase manufacturing capacity closer to U.S. customers. The expansion follows the company’s previously announced $2 billion investment program focused on plants, digital infrastructure, and workforce development.

The Milwaukee production area opened as scheduled, ahead of the Automation Fair taking place in Chicago in November. Rockwell plans to begin customer tours of the new facility in early 2026.
