Humanoid robot to be deployed in global semiconductor plants

by Marco van der Hoeven

Humanoid robot RoBee will be deployed in production and logistics operations across STMicroelectronics’ semiconductor plants worldwide following a supply agreement with Italian robotics company Oversonic Robotics. The agreement provides for the introduction of customized RoBee humanoid robots into several ST manufacturing sites, with the first unit already installed at the company’s advanced packaging and test facility in Malta.

The deployment represents the first operational use of cognitive humanoid robots within a semiconductor manufacturing environment, according to the companies involved. RoBee is designed to operate alongside human workers and existing automation systems, supporting manufacturing and logistics tasks that require interaction with complex production flows. STMicroelectronics said the robots are intended to contribute to managing manufacturing complexity, improving process continuity and supporting safety within factory operations.

Oversonic Robotics develops and manufactures cognitive humanoid robots certified for use in both industrial and healthcare settings. Prior to the agreement with STMicroelectronics, RoBee had been deployed in several Italian companies and tested in hospital environments. The collaboration also includes a planned joint demonstration of the humanoid robot and its industrial applications during the Consumer Electronics Show, where engineers from both companies will present live use cases in advanced manufacturing contexts.
