Hyperscale Data has assembled the first humanoid robot for a planned physical-AI data collection operation at its data centre in Michigan. The company has ordered 143 robots from Chinese manufacturer AGIBOT and expects to install as many as 100 of them at the site.
The first OPR-R2 robot was assembled on 16 July. Although Hyperscale Data says several additional units are now being installed, the company has not disclosed how many robots have arrived or when the complete fleet will become operational. Delivery remains dependent on manufacturing and supply-chain conditions.
The robots will not primarily be used to automate the operation of the data centre itself. Instead, they will perform practical tasks in controlled real-world environments while recording visual, spatial, movement and interaction data. Hyperscale Data intends to process this information into training datasets for vision-language-action models, robotics foundation models and other multimodal AI systems.
The programme is intended to address a growing challenge for physical AI developers. Unlike language models, which can be trained on large volumes of digital text and images, robotic systems require data showing how machines move, manipulate objects and interact with physical environments.
Hyperscale Data is therefore positioning the Michigan site as a physical-AI data factory. The robots will serve as data-collection platforms, while the surrounding data-centre infrastructure will be used to store, process and potentially train AI models on the resulting information. The company says all data created through the programme will remain in the United States.
AGIBOT robots under US branding
The OPR-R2 is based on technology supplied by AGIBOT. Under an agreement signed earlier this year, AGIBOT will provide up to 143 robots to Omnipresent Robotics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyperscale Data. The total value of the orders could reach approximately $13.4 million.
The agreement allows Omnipresent Robotics to sell and operate the machines under its own brand, including replacing AGIBOT logos with Omnipresent branding. The robots are therefore not a new humanoid platform developed independently by Hyperscale Data, but AGIBOT machines being deployed under the OPR-R2 name.
Up to 100 robots are currently expected to operate at the Michigan facility. Hyperscale Data says the remaining units could be assigned to pilot projects with external partners, although no customers or pilot locations have yet been announced.
The commercial rights to the collected data remain with Omnipresent Robotics. Its agreement with AGIBOT gives the US company the right to sell, license and otherwise commercialise the datasets without sharing revenue with the robot manufacturer, unless AGIBOT provides specific assistance with a transaction.
The agreement also restricts AGIBOT from remotely accessing the robots or receiving operational data without prior permission. This structure appears intended to reassure potential US customers that the data collected by the Chinese-built robots will remain under American control.
Dedicated robotics facility
Hyperscale Data is converting approximately 100,000 square feet of its existing Michigan building into a robotics research, testing and data-collection centre. The space is expected to include robot assembly and testing areas, simulated working environments, teleoperation stations and infrastructure for processing training data.
The broader facility covers around 617,000 square feet and already supports data-centre and Bitcoin-mining activities. Hyperscale Data plans to combine its existing computing and power infrastructure with robotics operations and AI model development.
Production of the first batch of 30 robots began earlier this year. Hyperscale Data previously said these units would be assigned to a model-training laboratory, where they could support data collection, simulation validation, facility operations and embodied-AI research.
The company says the expansion could create more than 500 jobs over the next three years, including positions for robotics engineers, AI data specialists and operations personnel. This remains a projection dependent on the programme expanding as planned.
