Kongsberg Discovery has announced plans to commence production of its HUGIN autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in the United States. The company stated that the move is aimed at addressing increased demand for subsea technologies within the U.S. market, particularly from the defense sector.
Production is set to begin at Kongsberg’s existing facility in Lynnwood, Washington, while a site for a future dedicated production facility is under consideration. The company cited growing requirements from U.S. government and commercial clients, including the U.S. Navy, as a key factor in the decision to localize manufacturing.
Martin Wien Fjell, President of Kongsberg Discovery, said that establishing domestic production capabilities would enhance the company’s ability to meet evolving operational needs and support its U.S.-based supply chain. He added that heightened geopolitical tensions have contributed to increased interest in unmanned underwater systems.
Kongsberg Discovery has previously delivered HUGIN AUVs to multiple U.S. entities, including the Navy, and to clients in commercial and academic sectors. According to the company, HUGIN systems are currently in use by 12 naval forces for operations such as seafloor mapping, mine countermeasures, and subsea surveillance.
The company’s U.S. operations—formerly known as Kongsberg Underwater Technology LLC—have supported sonar-based research and survey systems since 1989. Kongsberg Discovery equipment is currently installed on more than 30 vessels operated by the U.S. government and academic institutions. In addition to sonar systems, the company supplies uncrewed platform solutions to government customers.
Kongsberg employs approximately 900 people across 15 locations in the U.S. and Canada, and all business areas are represented in the region. The company indicated that further expansion in North America remains part of its broader strategic plan. Kongsberg Discovery is a subsidiary of Norway-based Kongsberg Gruppen ASA, which develops and supplies high-technology systems for sectors including defense, marine, aerospace, and energy.
