LG and TDK Partner on Robot Vision and Tactile Sensors

LG Innotek and TDK have agreed to jointly develop sensing modules for robots and other physical artificial intelligence applications, combining LG Innotek’s optical and module-design capabilities with TDK’s sensor technologies. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering next-generation vision sensing modules, tactile sensing systems and sensor-data processing. Their initial projects are expected to include a vision module equipped with an inertial sensor and a tactile module designed for installation on robots’ hands, arms and bodies.

LG Innotek plans to integrate its vision sensing modules with TDK components such as inertial measurement units, position sensors and microphones. The companies aim to combine image, movement, position and sound data to improve robots’ ability to identify their surroundings.

Integrating an inertial measurement unit could support functions including motion-blur compensation, image stabilization, high-frequency tracking and dead reckoning. Combining several sensors within one module could also reduce the number of separate components that robot manufacturers need to purchase and connect.

The companies plan to introduce their first vision sensing module using an inertial sensor in 2027. LG Innotek and TDK are also targeting the development of a tactile sensing module by 2027. The component is intended to allow robots to detect contact with objects and measure the pressure applied while handling them. LG Innotek will contribute module design and digital signal-processing capabilities, while TDK will provide sensing technologies developed for consumer, automotive and other applications. TDK’s sensor portfolio includes inertial, directional, temperature, pressure and position sensors.

The companies said they may extend the partnership to areas including real-time processing and sensor-data analysis. “In the robotics industry, multi-sensing—the integration of numerous sensors into a single system—is expected to become increasingly important,” LG Innotek Chief Executive Moon Hyuksoo said. “Through our collaboration with TDK, which offers a broad portfolio of sensor technologies, we aim to help shape the ecosystem for core robotic components.” TDK President and Chief Executive Noboru Saito said the companies intend to combine TDK’s sensors and underlying technologies with LG Innotek’s capabilities to develop products for global customers.

LG Innotek is also developing composite sensing modules that combine cameras, lidar and radar. The company has been working with technology companies including Boston Dynamics as it expands its activities in robotics and physical AI sensing.
