Meta acquires Assured Robot Intelligence to support humanoid robot AI development

by Marco van der Hoeven

Meta has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a start-up developing AI models for robots. The company, also known as ARI, focuses among other things on technology for humanoid robots. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition was first reported by Bloomberg and has been confirmed by Meta. Assured Robot Intelligence is based in San Diego and works on AI systems that should help robots understand, predict and adapt to human behaviour. The deal fits into the broader development of embodied AI, where artificial intelligence is used not only to process digital information, but also to control machines operating in the physical world.

According to reports by TechCrunch and other outlets, ARI’s team will join Meta Superintelligence Labs. The company was founded by Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto, both researchers in robotics. Wang is affiliated with UC San Diego, while Pinto is a professor at New York University. Their work includes robot learning, manipulation and AI models for physical interaction.

For Meta, the acquisition marks another step into robotics. The company has long invested in AI, augmented reality and mixed reality, but humanoid robots bring these fields closer to physical automation. Earlier reports indicated that Meta is exploring a role in the software layer for robotics, potentially as a platform provider rather than only as a hardware manufacturer.

The deal does not necessarily mean that Meta will soon launch its own humanoid robot. At this stage, the focus appears to be on robot intelligence: the models and control systems that allow robots to perform tasks in human environments. This includes perception, planning, movement and the ability to adapt to changing real-world conditions.

Meta is entering a growing field of companies working on the “brains” of robots. While humanoid robot hardware often receives much of the attention, practical deployment depends heavily on software that can interact safely, reliably and flexibly with the physical world. With ARI, Meta adds specialist expertise at the intersection of AI and robotics.

The amount Meta paid for Assured Robot Intelligence has not been disclosed. It is also not yet clear which specific products or applications will result from the acquisition.
