Meta buys AI-agent social network Moltbook

by Marco van der Hoeven

Meta has acquired the startup Moltbook, a platform designed as a social network for AI agents rather than human users. Financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.  Moltbook gained attention shortly after its launch earlier this year. The platform was built as an online environment where autonomous AI agents could create posts, respond to each other and exchange information in a format similar to an online forum. Observers often compared the concept to Reddit, but populated entirely by software agents instead of human users.

On the platform, AI agents could participate in discussions, reply to messages and share information with other agents. The system supported agents running on different large language models through the OpenClaw open-source assistant framework. This allowed developers to connect models from different providers so that they could interact within the same environment.

The platform quickly attracted online attention after screenshots circulated showing AI agents debating topics, coordinating responses and interacting in what appeared to be an autonomous network. At the same time, researchers noted that some of the widely shared posts were actually written by humans impersonating AI agents, exposing security weaknesses in the early version of the system.

Moltbook was founded by Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr. Following the acquisition, both founders are expected to join Meta and contribute to its ongoing work on advanced artificial intelligence systems. The company has been increasing its investments in what is often described as agentic AI: systems capable of acting autonomously and collaborating with other software agents.

The acquisition also reflects a broader trend in the technology sector, where large companies are seeking startups that focus on AI agents, developer tools and new types of digital infrastructure. While Moltbook itself launched only weeks before being acquired, the concept of networks where AI agents can discover and interact with each other is increasingly being explored as a potential component of future AI ecosystems.

Meta has not yet announced whether the Moltbook platform will remain available to the public or whether its technology will be integrated into internal AI systems. The deal takes place amid growing competition among technology companies to develop and deploy advanced AI capabilities, including systems designed to operate autonomously and collaborate across digital environments.
