NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 2 targets robots and drones with higher edge AI performance

by Pieter Werner

NVIDIA has introduced the Jetson Orin Nano 2, a compact computing platform designed to run AI workloads locally in robots, delivery and inspection drones, and machine-vision systems. The module and developer kit are expected to become available in the first half of 2027.

The Jetson Orin Nano 2 provides 78 trillion operations per second of AI compute, 8GB of memory and an eight-core Arm CPU. NVIDIA says the system delivers twice the inference performance of the Jetson Orin Nano Super while retaining the same form factor. In a 15-watt operating mode, it uses 40% less power while delivering the same performance as its predecessor.

The additional computing capacity is intended to allow developers to run large language models and vision-language models directly on edge devices. NVIDIA’s software stack supports models including NVIDIA Cosmos and Nemotron as well as Gemma 4 and Qwen 3. Running these models locally can enable robots and other autonomous systems to process language, images and sensor information without sending every workload to a data center.

The platform is also intended for applications requiring real-time perception and interaction. Matic Robotics plans to use Jetson Orin Nano 2 in its home-cleaning robots for functions including conversational AI, gesture detection, mapping, semantic understanding and autonomous cleaning. Alphabet subsidiary Wing, which currently uses Jetson Orin Nano Super in its delivery-drone fleet, plans to evaluate the new platform for AI perception and reasoning. Cognex and Doosan Bobcat are also among the companies adopting or evaluating the system.

NVIDIA says more than three million developers use its robotics stack. Hardware companies including AAEON, ADLINK, Advantech, Aetina, Antmicro, Aptiv and Seeed Studio are developing carrier boards, hardware systems, software or reference designs around the Jetson platform.

“Today’s small and medium frontier models have reached the accuracy of last year’s largest frontier models, unlocking real-time intelligence for edge devices,” said Deepu Talla, vice president of robotics and edge AI at NVIDIA. He said the Jetson Orin Nano 2 is intended to provide the computing performance and energy efficiency required to run these workloads at the edge.
