OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has acquired hardware startup io in a $6.5 billion all-stock deal. The company was founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, together with a team of ex-Apple colleagues. With this acquisition OpenAI moves into the realm of AI-powered hardware.
Founded in 2024, io focuses on creating innovative devices that seamlessly integrate artificial intelligence into daily life. OpenAI previously held a substantial minority stake in the company and has now opted to take full control as it expands beyond software into the development of its own physical products.
While specific product details remain under wraps, both Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have indicated that the upcoming device will go beyond the functionality of smartphones or laptops. The aim is to create a fundamentally new type of consumer device that offers intuitive and direct access to AI. The first results of this collaboration are expected to be revealed in 2026.
Design work will continue to be led by LoveFrom, Ive’s independent design firm, which has previously worked with companies like Apple and Ferrari. While LoveFrom will remain separate from OpenAI, it will play a key role in shaping the look and feel of the new AI hardware.
