Painting, Patrolling, and Diving: The Many Roles Robots Now Play at Equinor

by Marco van der Hoeven

Stavanger, the oil capital of Norway, hosted the European Robotics Forum 2026 this week. Rocking Robots spoke with Stine Vatneberg of Equinor about how the energy giant is deploying robotics across its operations — from drones above offshore installations to autonomous systems on the seabed.

For Equinor, ERF is above all a collaboration platform: a place to develop industry-wide solutions that address real use cases around safety, efficiency, and environmental monitoring. Drones, ground robots, and subsea systems are already active across multiple assets. Looking further ahead, Vatneberg sketches an ambitious vision of integrated, largely unmanned operations capable of servicing the entire Norwegian Continental Shelf.
