Palladyne AI Secures Additional U.S. Air Force Funding, For Robotic Surface Remediation

by Pieter Werner

Palladyne AI Corp., a developer of artificial intelligence software for robotic platforms in defense and commercial sectors, has received additional funding from the U.S. Air Force under its existing contract with the Air Logistics Complex at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. This development forms part of a multi-year Phase II contract initiated through the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) program operated by AFWERX AFVentures, the Air Force’s innovation arm.

The company also announced the completion of several Military Utility Assessment milestones. These assessments focused on the use of its Palladyne IQ closed-loop autonomy software to enable robotic systems to perform surface remediation tasks on complex aircraft components. Specifically, Palladyne AI demonstrated automated media blasting capabilities using a Fanuc M710 robot, which involved controlling parameters such as stand-off distance, blasting path width, angle of incidence, and operational speed. Another milestone involved automated and teleoperated sanding using a Universal Robots UR10e platform, designed for high-precision tasks on contoured and elevated surfaces.

These activities were carried out in the second year of the four-year project timeline and are aimed at validating the operational use of Palladyne’s AI software in military logistics and maintenance settings.
