Polytag Enables Real-Time Packaging Waste Tracking with Machine Vision Software

by Pieter Werner

Polytag is using Zebra’s Aurora Vision Library to track packaging waste in real time within recycling facilities. The technology gives organisations immediate insight into waste streams and helps them comply with regulations such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

By applying invisible UV 2D tags to packaging and using smart camera systems, the solution can automatically detect and trace waste, even on high-speed conveyor belts and in challenging environments such as poorly lit or dusty facilities. The system processes 20 frames per second and requires no hardware modifications. It is also compatible with third-party equipment, offering flexibility in deployment.

Polytag partnered with Zebra Technologies and automation specialist Automatica to implement the system. While initial proof-of-concept trials relied on embedded camera setups, the current solution proved to be more scalable and reliable for industrial use. In a test facility equipped with six units, the system achieved a 100% detection rate.

The data gathered allows organisations to monitor recycling performance per product and location, identify trends in consumer behaviour, and take targeted actions—such as redesigning packaging or launching recycling awareness campaigns.
