Qatar Airways Employs AI-Powered Digital Cabin Crew

by Marco van der Hoeven

Qatar Airways is employing Sama, described as the world’s first digital human cabin crew. The airline positions Sama as part of its broader digitalisation and customer service strategy, combining artificial intelligence with virtual human interaction to support passengers before and during their journey.

According to the airline, Sama is designed to assist travellers with queries, booking processes, and information about services offered by Qatar Airways. Unlike conventional chatbots, Sama appears as a lifelike digital avatar, capable of engaging in natural conversations with customers. The system was first showcased at Web Summit Qatar 2025 and has since been integrated into both passenger and cargo operations.

The deployment of Sama builds on Qatar Airways’ wider investment in digital tools. Earlier this year, Qatar Airways Cargo launched an enhanced mobile app with self-service booking, tracking, and document management. Sama complements this digital ecosystem by providing a human-like interface that can bridge the gap between traditional service channels and automated systems.

Qatar Airways says that Sama is not intended to replace human cabin crew but to extend the airline’s service capacity through digital channels. The technology is integrated into the airline’s booking platforms and social media presence, offering 24/7 interaction.

By employing Sama, Qatar Airways becomes the first airline to present a digital human cabin crew at scale. The move reflects a trend across the aviation sector where airlines are exploring the use of AI, robotics, and digital humans to streamline customer interactions, improve efficiency, and reduce reliance on manual processes. The airline has announced that Sama will continue to evolve with new features, aiming to provide more personalised assistance to customers in the future.

The deployment of Sama builds on Qatar Airways’ wider investment in digital tools. Qatar Airways Cargo also launched an enhanced mobile app with self-service booking, real-time shipment tracking, flight schedules, and digital document management. The app reduces manual dependencies and offers full integration with the airline’s backend systems.
