SAP and Cyberwave Deploy Autonomous Robots at German Warehouse

by Pieter Werner

SAP SE and Cyberwave have deployed autonomous AI-powered robots at an SAP logistics warehouse in St. Leon-Rot, Germany, where the systems are being used for box folding, packaging and in-house shipping fulfillment. The warehouse operates on SAP Logistics Management, the company’s cloud-native logistics execution system. The deployment uses SAP’s Embodied AI Service to translate warehouse tasks into robot commands, with integration through SAP Business Technology Platform and Cyberwave’s robotics software platform.

SAP said the robots are operating in a live warehouse environment rather than a research setting. The company said the system is intended to improve throughput and reduce repetitive, physically demanding work for human employees.

Tim Kuebler, SAP’s head of warehouse and shipping, said the deployment shows that physical AI is “delivering real value today.” He said SAP Logistics Management provides the digital infrastructure that allows robots to be deployed and scaled within the company’s warehouse processes.

Cyberwave’s platform is designed to train robots for logistics tasks that involve changing objects, layouts and operating conditions. The company said its system uses demonstration-based training, vision-language-action models and reinforcement learning models to allow robots to handle variations in objects, orientations and workflows.

Simone Di Somma, Cyberwave’s co-founder and chief executive, said the project combines SAP’s logistics system with Cyberwave’s ability to collect warehouse training data and fine-tune models for variable logistics tasks. He said robots “no longer need to be painstakingly programmed for every object or scenario.”

According to the companies, the integration from robot training to live operation was completed using SAP Business Technology Platform and Cyberwave’s platform. The robots are now performing the assigned warehouse tasks autonomously at SAP’s St. Leon-Rot site.
