Surgical Robot Gets CE Approval

by Pieter Werner

Intuitive has received CE Mark approval for its da Vinci 5 Surgical System, allowing its use in adult and pediatric minimally invasive endoscopic procedures across Europe. The approval covers a broad range of abdominopelvic surgical procedures, including urological, gynecological, general laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic surgeries.

The da Vinci 5 is the latest model in Intuitive’s robotic surgery portfolio and follows the da Vinci Xi system. According to the company, the new system incorporates more than 150 enhancements and has been designed to improve surgical performance and operational efficiency. It features updates in force feedback technology, 3D vision systems, and an ergonomic console. The system also includes integrated tools for data collection and analysis, powered by upgraded sensors and processors, which Intuitive states have increased computing capabilities.

The company reported that da Vinci systems were used in the treatment of over 410,000 patients in Europe in 2024 and have been used in nearly 17 million procedures globally. The da Vinci 5 system had previously received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2024 for use in adult urological, general, gynecological, and thoracic surgeries.

Intuitive’s da Vinci family also includes the da Vinci X and Xi multi-port systems and the da Vinci SP single-port system. The company marks its 30th anniversary in 2025, with a continued focus on advancing robotic-assisted surgical technologies.
