Tesla has completed what it claims to be the world’s first fully autonomous delivery of a passenger vehicle. A Model Y was transported from the company’s Gigafactory near Austin, Texas, to a customer’s home without any human driver or remote supervision on board. The approximately 15-mile route included highways, suburban streets, and urban areas.
The delivery used Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. According to the company, the vehicle operated autonomously throughout the journey, including navigating real-world traffic conditions at speeds of up to 72 miles per hour. Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed the event on social media, stating that the car completed the trip “with no one inside at any point and no remote operator.” The customer, identified only as Jose, shared images of the vehicle and accompanying software version after receiving the delivery.
Tesla’s approach to autonomy relies solely on camera-based vision systems, without the use of lidar or radar. The company has faced ongoing scrutiny over the safety and reliability of its FSD technology. In parallel, regulators including the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are reviewing the rollout of unsupervised driving features, particularly after incidents involving Tesla’s robotaxi service during initial public testing.
