The U.S. Air Force is continuing its investment in autonomous military robotics by adding $2.9 million to an existing development contract with Palladyne AI. The additional funding brings the total value of the programme to more than $10.6 million. The contract supports the development of Palladyne IQ, an embodied artificial intelligence architecture designed to allow robots to learn physical tasks from human demonstrations and subsequently perform them autonomously.
The programme was originally awarded in September 2023 under the U.S. government’s Strategic Funding Increase, or STRATFI, initiative. The Air Force has since provided several rounds of funding as the project moved through development and testing, including the completion of an initial phase in October 2024 and an additional investment in April 2025.
The latest funding will be used for a new series of demonstrations involving physical robotic platforms. These will include teaching robots manipulation tasks through human-guided machine learning, using mixed-reality systems to control robots remotely and testing autonomous task execution in scenarios considered relevant to the Air Force.
Palladyne says its software can learn tasks from between one and five human demonstrations. The aim is for a robot to apply what it has learned when the task or environment changes, rather than requiring separate programming for every situation.
The architecture is also intended to run locally on the robot, without depending on a continuous cloud connection. That is relevant for military applications in which communications may be unavailable, disrupted or deliberately jammed.
Palladyne IQ is described as hardware-agnostic, meaning the software is being developed for use with different robotic platforms and sensor configurations. The current announcement does not identify which specific robots will be used in the next demonstrations.
The Air Force’s decision follows a wider increase in military spending on autonomous aircraft, ground vehicles and robotic support systems. Defence organisations are examining how robots can be used for tasks such as reconnaissance, logistics, maintenance, surveillance and operations in environments that are considered too dangerous for personnel.
However, the Palladyne programme remains a development and demonstration project. The additional funding does not represent an order for operational robots or a decision to deploy Palladyne IQ across the Air Force.
Instead, the contract extension shows that the military considers the technology sufficiently relevant to continue testing. It also illustrates how defence organisations are using staged funding programmes to move autonomous robotics from laboratory development towards demonstrations in more realistic operational conditions.
