UL Solutions has issued its first certification for a remotely operated robot designed for use in hazardous locations, awarding the certification to ExRobotics for its ExR-2.5 inspection robot. The certification is based on UL 6260, the Outline of Investigation for Remotely-Operated Inspection and Maintenance Equipment for Hazardous (Classified) Locations. The standard provides a framework for evaluating remotely operated robots used for inspection and maintenance in environments where explosive gases, vapors or dusts may be present, as defined by the National Electrical Code.
According to UL Solutions, the certification program was developed to evaluate whether robotic equipment can operate safely in hazardous locations without becoming an ignition source. The assessment covers risks including fire, explosion, electric shock and mechanical hazards. Testing of the ExR-2.5 robot included evaluations of its batteries, electrical systems and mechanical components under normal operating and fault conditions, including scenarios involving explosive atmospheres.

Mark Mildon, chief executive officer of ExRobotics, said the certification confirms that the ExR-2.5 meets safety requirements for operation in hazardous locations and provides customers with assurance regarding the robot’s suitability for those environments.
UL 6260 applies to remotely operated inspection and maintenance robots using various motion systems and power sources across industries including oil and gas, petrochemical processing, agriculture, transportation, pharmaceuticals, energy and mining. UL Solutions said the certification is intended to support the deployment of robotic inspection and maintenance technologies in environments where explosive atmospheres may be present while contributing to inspection reliability and operational continuity.
