Volkswagen has introduced the production model of the ID. Buzz AD, its first fully autonomous vehicle developed specifically for use in mobility services. The vehicle is part of a broader package offered by MOIA, the Volkswagen Group’s mobility subsidiary, which includes not only the vehicle itself but also a software platform and operational support for providers of autonomous transport services.
The ID. Buzz AD is equipped with Mobileye’s autonomous driving system and is built to meet the requirements for SAE Level 4 automated driving. MOIA’s proprietary software infrastructure leverages artificial intelligence to manage vehicle fleets in real time, support passenger interaction, and ensure safety. The system is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing ride-booking applications and includes remote monitoring and emergency intervention capabilities.
MOIA presents the solution as a turnkey platform for both public and private mobility providers. This package includes ‘Operator Enablement’ services, supporting fleet operators with implementation, training, simulation, and live operational monitoring.
The deployment of the autonomous service will begin in Hamburg. Volkswagen and MOIA plan to scale the technology across Europe and the United States starting in 2026. The integrated system, including the ID. Buzz AD and MOIA’s Autonomous Driving Mobility-as-a-Service (AD MaaS) platform, is intended for use not only in urban areas but also in suburban and rural regions. This approach aims to address challenges such as driver shortages and limited transport availability outside city centers.
