Volkwagen Implements AI-driven Virtual Twins in Production

by Pieter Werner

Volkswagen Group will implement Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform in its production processes. With this AI-driven digital twin technology, the German automaker aims to make vehicle development more efficient, improve collaboration between teams, and shorten time-to-market.

The platform provides engineers, designers, and production teams at Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche access to a collaborative, cloud-based work environment. Here, vehicles can be digitally modeled and tested before physical production begins. These so-called ‘virtual twins’ allow for the simulation of every aspect of the development process, from design to production, enabling potential issues to be detected early on.

The integration of the platform includes four industry-specific solutions: Global Modular Architecture, Smart, Safe and Connected, Efficient Multi-Energy Platform, and On-Target Vehicle Launch. According to Volkswagen, this digitization not only helps accelerate innovation but also assists in complying with international regulations and sustainability standards.

Hauke Stars, a board member for IT at Volkswagen Group, calls the collaboration with Dassault Systèmes a significant milestone in the renewal of the company’s IT system landscape. “With consistent data flows and AI solutions, we are creating a technological leap forward for our teams in development and factory planning. At the same time, we are structurally lowering IT costs and accelerating processes by streamlining our system complexity,” says Stars.

Dassault Systèmes, which has been collaborating with Volkswagen for four decades, highlights the role of artificial intelligence and cloud technology in this transition. “Our AI-powered virtual twins and the power and flexibility of the cloud will strengthen the hardware and software innovation of the Volkswagen Group,” says Pascal Daloz, CEO of Dassault Systèmes. He adds that this collaboration is intended to accelerate the software-based transformation of the company.
