Manipal Hospital Gurugram Doctor Reports 41 Robotic Gynaecological Surgeries in 90 Days

by Pieter Werner

Manipal Hospital Gurugram said Dr. Amita Shah, chairman of obstetrics and gynaecology, robotic laparoscopy and endoscopy surgery, has performed 41 robotic gynaecological surgeries over a 90-day period. The hospital described Shah as the first gynaecologist in India to reach that number within the stated timeframe.

The procedures included treatment for complex cases of endometriosis using robot-assisted and laparoscopic techniques. Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus and can cause pelvic pain and fertility problems.

Cases treated by Shah included a 32-year-old woman with deep endometriosis and a 29-year-old woman who subsequently conceived following fertility-preserving surgery. Other patients included a 36-year-old woman with a large endometriotic cyst described as comparable in size to an 18-week pregnancy and a 31-year-old woman with cysts affecting both ovaries and extensive adhesions involving the fallopian tubes.

The hospital said minimally invasive and robot-assisted techniques were used to remove or treat diseased tissue while seeking to preserve healthy pelvic tissue and reproductive function where possible.

“Endometriosis is far more than severe period pain. It is a progressive condition that can cause chronic pain, damage reproductive organs and affect fertility, yet its symptoms are often dismissed or normalised for years,” Shah said.

She said surgical precision is particularly important in cases involving deep lesions, large cysts or extensive adhesions. According to Shah, robot-assisted surgery provides high-definition three-dimensional imaging and greater precision that can assist surgeons in treating affected tissue while seeking to preserve reproductive function.

Manipal Hospital Gurugram uses robotic and laparoscopic surgery for complex gynaecological conditions, including cases where fertility preservation is a consideration. The hospital said early diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis can help address symptoms and limit the effects of disease progression.
