Can’t find skilled people for different automation roles externally? Look internally, to your employees, a lot of whom, after upskilling, are perfectly able to take on the role of citizen developer. After all, everyone working with IT will be a developer, eventually, says Patrick Kersten of UiPath Learning Partner Computrain/LLPA in this interview about upskilling, citizen developers and automation at TOGETHER Amsterdam.

In November and December 2021, Gartner surveyed 1,120 manager-level or higher respondents in organisations with at least $1 million in annual revenue in North America, Western Europe and Asia/Pacific to understand how organisations approach large-scale buying efforts for enterprise technology.

To accelerate value creation, CIOs and IT executives should focus on three key areas – leading from anywhere, nurturing connections and reaching beyond, according to Gartner.

IT executives see the talent shortage as the most significant adoption barrier to 64% of emerging technologies, compared with just 4% in 2020, according to a new survey from Gartner.  A lack of talent availability was cited far more often than other barriers this year, such as implementation cost (29%) or security risk (7%). Talent availability is for 75% the main adoption risk factor for automation.

Democratization of IT and citizen developers are a hot topic, especially in RPA and low code. Although the trend is not new, we now see a rapid take up, in a ‘perfect combination of people, process and technology’. This leads to a situation which in the end is beneficially for both the business and IT.

By 2024, 80% of technology products and services will be built by those who are not technology professionals, according to Gartner. This trend is driven by a new category of buyers outside of the traditional IT organisation who are occupying a larger share of the overall IT market. Today, total business-led IT spend averages up to 36% of the total formal IT budget.

Today the first automation school launches in Ireland to educate the next generation of the country’s workforce on automation. Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board has partnered with the ABP School of Automation and UiPath on the delivery of this training through the funding of a pilot traineeship.

Nearly one in five workers (18%) consider themselves to be digital technology experts since COVID-19, while over half consider themselves proficient, according to a new survey from Gartner.
