ABB invests in AI-powered energy management technologies

by Pieter Werner

ABB has made an investment in Ndustrial, a U.S.-based startup specializing in clean technology and AI-powered energy management systems. This investment aims to bolster ABB’s digital and sustainability offerings by integrating Ndustrial’s platform, which focuses on optimizing energy usage in real time and enhancing production processes. Financial specifics of the investment, conducted through ABB Ventures, were not disclosed.

The collaboration with Ndustrial is intended to advance ABB’s efforts in digitalization and sustainability. Ndustrial’s technology facilitates enhanced energy decisions by analyzing and integrating various data sources such as market rates, weather conditions, and equipment performance. This capability is poised to help ABB’s customers manage their energy costs more effectively and contribute to broader decarbonization goals.

This move is part of ABB’s larger strategy to create an ecosystem of innovative partners. Previously, in April 2024, ABB also invested in GridBeyond, a company that provides AI-based energy management solutions. These investments are seen as critical to strengthening ABB Electrification’s position in the market by adding cutting-edge, predictive energy management solutions to its portfolio.

Ndustrial, described by its co-founder John Crawford as a company distinguishing itself by delivering tangible benefits from AI and machine learning, has already demonstrated significant impact in the energy sector. The company claims to have helped clients save over $100 million in energy costs over the past decade, highlighting the practical effectiveness of their energy management system.

ABB’s investment in Ndustrial aligns with its ongoing commitment to innovation in the areas of industrial electrification and automation. ABB Ventures, the venture capital arm of ABB, has been active since 2009, investing in a variety of sectors including AI, robotics, and energy transition, emphasizing ABB’s dedication to driving industrial transformation and sustainability.
