Microsoft and Meta Announce Llama 2 AI

by Pieter Werner

Meta and Microsoft have unveiled Llama 2, the latest version of their open-source large language model, aimed to expand access to advanced artificial intelligence technologies for both research and commercial applications. This launch marks a significant step in the longstanding partnership between the two tech behemoths, with Microsoft being named as the preferred partner for Llama 2.

Llama 2, which is free for research and commercial use, is the successor to Llama 1, which recorded over 100,000 access requests. This demand underscores the recognition of large language models as pivotal tools in the development of new AI-powered experiences across various sectors. The new model aims to fuel innovation by offering entities ranging from startups to established corporations access to AI tools, which could otherwise be challenging to develop independently.

The open-source nature of the model is expected to foster a collaborative approach to addressing AI-related challenges and vulnerabilities, as developers and researchers globally can test and provide feedback. Meta argues that such an open access approach will not only lead to the faster identification and resolution of issues but also stimulate the economic and social benefits of AI.

The announcement underscores both companies’ commitment to providing open access to advanced AI technologies and fostering a shared learning environment. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella declared at the Microsoft Inspire event that their partnership’s expansion would focus on generative AI efforts. As a result, Llama 2 is now available in the Azure AI model catalog, optimized for local operation on Windows, and also accessible through Amazon Web Services (AWS), Hugging Face, among other providers.

Microsoft and Meta have had a long and fruitful collaboration history, co-authoring research papers, developing AI frameworks, and promoting the widespread adoption of PyTorch – an AI framework created by Meta and the AI community. The two tech giants are also among the founding members of the PyTorch Foundation. Their partnership extends to the development of synthetic media and into the metaverse, enhancing immersive experiences for users.

This expanded partnership exemplifies Microsoft and Meta’s commitment to democratizing AI access, a sentiment shared by a broad range of supporters around the globe. The duo’s decision to share large language models like Llama 2 aligns with their history of developing and sharing industry-standard frameworks, such as React and PyTorch.

With the launch of Llama 2, Meta and Microsoft aim to galvanize the development of generative AI and look forward to the innovative solutions that will emerge from this open-source approach.
