NVIDIA Beats Trend of Declining Revenue in Semiconductors

by Marco van der Hoeven

In the declining semiconductor market in 2023, NVIDIA emerged as a notable exception, demonstrating a robust growth trajectory, particularly in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. According to the latest report by Gartner., the overall semiconductor revenue worldwide experienced a significant downturn, totaling $533 billion, a decline of 11.1% from the previous year. This downturn was particularly acute in the memory segment, which saw one of its worst declines in history.

Despite these challenging market conditions, NVIDIA distinguished itself by recording a remarkable 56.4% growth in its semiconductor revenue, reaching $24 billion. This surge propelled NVIDIA into the top five semiconductor vendors for the first time, highlighting its successful strategy and strong market position in AI silicon. NVIDIA’s success in this area stands in stark contrast to the broader industry trends, where only 9 out of the top 25 semiconductor vendors managed to post revenue growth, and 10 suffered double-digit declines.

The semiconductor industry, known for its cyclicality, witnessed significant shifts in its landscape in 2023. Intel regained the top spot from Samsung, with a total revenue of $48.7 billion, despite the underperformance of memory vendors. Samsung, which fell to the second position, reported a revenue of $39.9 billion. Other notable changes included STMicroelectronics’ rise to the 8th rank, driven by a 7.7% increase in revenue, largely attributed to its strong presence in the automotive segment.

The memory revenue’s steep decline, particularly in DRAM and NAND flash sectors, was a result of weaker demand and excess inventory in key markets like smartphones, PCs, and servers. The nonmemory segment, however, fared slightly better, declining only 3%. This was partly due to the sustained demand for non-memory semiconductors for AI applications, alongside robust growth in sectors like automotive (especially electric vehicles), defense, and aerospace.

NVIDIA’s standout performance in the AI market is a key indicator of the growing importance and potential of AI-related technologies in the semiconductor industry. While the broader market grapples with challenges, NVIDIA’s success story provides a glimpse into the evolving dynamics of the sector and the emerging opportunities in specialized segments like AI.
